Yoga Positions that Emulate Popular Youth Sports

We had the impression that we are the lone family not participating in the early Saturday morning soccer practice. In our community, it seems to be a "thing" that all the parents attend cold fall morning games with their children in lawn chairs and coffee in hand. The neighborhood kids also participate in other sports including swimming, basketball, tennis, gymnastics, ballet, skating, softball, karate, hockey, or golf when they aren't playing soccer. possibly two or three!

My daughter is currently interested in gymnastics. It's a joy to watch kids take up a young sport that develops their flexibility, strength, and stamina while also teaching them self-control, perseverance, and collaboration. Some kids discover their one sport while they are very young, while others experiment with a variety of sports, as we have seen. In either case, it's fantastic that these kids are using their energy to engage in constructive activities.

Getting over her fear of trying something new and joining a new sport without knowing anyone is something my daughter suffers with (and I've seen other kids face the same difficulty). Based on Katie's experience in her karate class, I authored Katie's Karate Class a few years ago. We discussed her love of yoga and how it relates to learning something new in order to help her overcome her fear of karate (karate). To discuss your kids' worries or anxieties about beginning a new sport, read this yoga book together.

Five yoga poses for children as part of sports

Check out this list of sports yoga positions to get kids talking about new sports they've never tried or expressing the thrill of their preferred activities. Our digitally downloadable Sports Yoga Cards for Kids contain twenty additional sports poses if you're looking for more.

1. PRETEND TO BE A SOCCER GOALIE.

Crescent Moon Pose instruction: Stand tall and raise your arms overhead with the palms facing one other. Tilt your upper body to one side. Remain in the center. Put your body in a sideways incline. Act as if you are a goalkeeper trying to stop the ball in soccer.

2. PRETEND TO BE A GYMNAST BALANCING ON A BEAM.

The Tree Pose is performed by standing on one leg. To balance, place the sole of your foot on the opposing inner thigh or calf while bending the knee of the leg you are not standing on. Act like a gymnast while you're on the balance beam. Repeat the process on the other side.

3. PRETEND TO BE A HOCKEY GOALIE.

Standing with your legs apart and your feet turned slightly outward is the Horse Stance. Kneel down, yet keep a steady stance. Play the role of a goalie protecting the net in hockey.

4. PRETEND TO BE A BASEBALL CATCHER.

How to perform the Squat Pose: Squat down with your knees apart and your arms in front of you. Place your hands on the floor. Play the role of a catcher getting ready for the pitch.

5. PRETEND TO BE A SWIMMER.

Lie on your stomach, elevate your chest and shoulders, and look up to perform the locust pose. As if swimming, move your arms in circles and kick your legs. Act as though you are swimming laps.

You can go to Resting Pose once you have finished practicing your sports-related yoga positions. After all the excitement of their yoga posture practice, encourage your kids to close their eyes (if that's comfortable for them) and take a few deep breaths to settle their thoughts and bodies.

You may lead them through a guided relaxation and ask them to picture themselves lying on a mat or field after a session of exercise. Imagine having the courage to take chances and develop new abilities in your preferred sport.
